Upcoming Museum Openings

Due to our having cancelled the May opening of the museum, we will be open two Saturday’s in June. Our regularly scheduled opening will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 10:00am-3:00pm. During the Burkittsville Town Yard Sale on Saturday, June 8, 2013, will be open again from 9:00am-3:00pm. We hope to see everyone out to tour the historic Resurrection Reformed Church, visit our museum examining the history of Burkittsville, and view our special exhibit “Victorian Splendor atop South Mountain: The Gapland Estate.”

CANCELLATION – SATURDAY, MAY 4

South Mountain Heritage Society will not be open this Saturday, May 4, 2013, due to staff conflicts. We appreciate all of our patrons who support regular museum openings, and apologize for any inconvenience. As always, you are able to make appointments to visit the museum or reference library, by contacting our historian and curator, Jody Brumage (jbrumage@comcast.net). SMHS will be open on the first Saturday in June as regularly scheduled, and we will be extending our Gathland Exhibit through July.

 

A New Museum Season Dawns!

After this long winter, we are grateful to be getting back to business in preserving and interpreting the history of Burkittsville! On Saturday, April 6, 2013, SMHS will participate in Frederick County Bell and History Days, heralding in a new museum season with the ringing of our historic 1896 church bell at 10:00 am. You will not want to miss hearing the chime of this bell ringing out over Burkittsville. We invite you to come and tour the historic Resurrection Reformed Church, a true historic landmark and architectural masterpiece. View our museum exhibits interpreting the history of Burkittsville. A special exhibit, which will run from April-June 2013 will open: Victorian Splendor Atop South Mountain: The Gathland Estate. We hope you will join us for this day and throughout the 2013 museum season at SMHS!

SPECIAL EVENT! Book Signing this Saturday, Dec. 15

Join us this Saturday, December 15, beginning at 1:00 when SMHS hosts a presentation and book signing with local author Robert P. Savitt. Savitt’s new publication, Middletown Valley, offers historic images of the towns of Middletown, Burkittsville, Myersville, Wolfsville, and others, as well as many historic facts about our valley. SMHS will have books for sale and we hope to see everyone out for this event.

SPECIAL EVENT: Book Presentation and Signing December 15

Join us on Saturday, December 15, 2012 from 1:00 – 3:00 for a special event.

Robert P.Savitt, author of the new book Middletown Valley, holds a doctoral degree
from Georgetown University, has served in the Departments of Defense and State,
and was legislative director for a US senator. Come to hear him talk about the history of our valley. He will have books for sale – a signed copy of Middletown Valley might make a lovely Christmas gift.

 

Museum’s By Candlelight – Dec. 8

On Saturday, December 8, 2012, South Mountain Heritage Society will open its doors in participation with Frederick County Museums By Candlelight. We hope you will join us for this annual event. Enjoy the historic Resurrection Reformed Church decked out with Christmas decorations, tour the museum, and enjoy live music. Children can make a Christmas ornament to take home. Refreshments will be available.

The museum will be open from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

SMHS Hosts Craft Sale

On Saturday, November 17 through Sunday, November 18, 2012, South Mountain Heritage Society will welcome visitors to the annual Holiday Craft Sale. Vendors will be set up throughout the church and museum rooms, and we welcome everyone to come out and get an early start on your holiday shopping! A special thanks goes to Gail Rudesill for her work in organizing this annual event.

Join us as we continue to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain. The museum and church will be open for tours from 10:00 – 2:00 today, and at 2:00, we will be holding a lecture by Rev. James Moss, “The Civil War’s Impact on the Churches of God” in the exhibit room. Everyone is welcome to come out and experience Burkittsville’s heritage!

Special September Openings!

This September marks the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain. Accordingly, we are adding a few extra openings beyond our regular first Saturdays to acommodate visitors to the area. SMHS will be open this Saturday, September 8, 2012 from 10:00 – 3:00, Friday, September 14, 2012 from 11:00 – 7:00, Saturday, September 15, 2012 from 9:00 – 3:00, and Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 1:00 – 4:00. We hope you will come out and visit the museum during one of these opening times. We will have several of our temporary exhibits from this year’s museum season open, studying various aspects of the Civil War. As always, we will invite you to tour the church and the museum. In addition, there are walking tours of the town on Tuesday, September 11 and Friday, September 14, which you can find out more on our South Mountain 150 page.
